The Tablet of BENAI KHURUM

Masonic tradition informs us that the building of King Solomon’s temple was entrusted to the Chief Architect Hiram Abiff who groomed Adonairam as his future successor as grand master of the temple builders of Tyre. Shortly before Hiram Abiff’s murder at the temple, the chief architect revealed to Adonairam the secrets behind the control of Tyre over the supply of bassalt. Bassalt was the hardest kind of rock used primarily as foundations of great stone structures such as King Solomon’s temple. Masonic lore handed down through the ages informs us that the location of the sources of bassalt in the mountains of Libanus was known only to two persons. The first was Hiram Abiff and the other was a crippled stonecutter named BENAI KHURUM, Hebrew for “Disciple of Hiram”. Benai Khurum was crippled during an accident in the quarry when he was an apprentice. His disability disqualified him to be elevated as Fellow of the Craft.   For many years thereafter, Benai Khurum appeared to his former fellows only during their annual reunion in Tyre. During these reunions Benai Khurum would receive charity from his former fellows. He would also reveal to Hiram Abiff the ever changing methods of locating the bassalt quarries which he had labored to conceal with the planting of trees. When Adonairam completed the construction of the temple, he resolved to right this injustice to Benai Khurum by elevating him to his rightful place in the lodge as Fellow of the Craft.

Brother FERNANDO GO was raised a Master Mason by this Lodge in - - - - 1957. Bro. Go was not a regularly attending member of the lodge. When he needed to place his family’s welfare over his Masonic duties, he would be inactive. When he again became capable to fully support his family, he would again return to active participation in the lodge. Such was the pattern of Bro. Go’s link with his lodge, a pattern that would continue up to his present twilight years. That for fifty years he has continued to return to his lodge is an emulation of the life of our ancient operative ancestor BENAI KHURUM, the Disciple of Hiram and keeper of the secrets of the bassalt quarries.

On this occasion, we, his Brethren with Labong Lodge No. 59, affectionately bestow upon Bro FERNANDO GO the Tablet of Benai Khurum.

The Tablet of BENAI KHURUM

This simple emblem of the legacy of BENAI KHURUM, a disciple of Grand Master Hiram Abiff and trustee to the secret location of the bassalt quarries in the mountains of ancient Lebanon, is humbly bestowed upon:

BRO. FERNANDO GO

(Raised a Master Mason, ------- 1957)

Working tirelessly and without aspiration for honors, BENAI KHURUM ensured that the supply of the sought after bassalt ashlars remained available only to his grand lodge of temple builders by hiding the quarries with planted trees. His labors in the remote mountains of Lebanon enabled the guild of temple builders in the City of Tyre to maintain its reputation as the best in the land. When his mentor Hiram Abiff was killed inside the precincts of the Temple of Solomon, the successor grand master Adonairam righted the long standing injustice to BENAI KHURUM by elevating him to his rightful place in the lodge as Fellow of the Craft. .
